My kids are five-and-a-half and almost four so they’re getting older and looking for more fun things to do in the summer. There are so many options in and around Toronto. Here are five that I’d like to try this year:

Pirate Life on Centre Island
My son has been obsessed with treasure maps as of late and I know he would love to try out life as a pirate. Pirate Life on Centre Island seems to fit the bill. Kids of all ages can come dressed as pirates or borrow pirate attire from the crew then set sail on the Island Rogue – a 45 foot pirate ship – to head out to sea in pursuit of adventure & sunken treasure. Tickets are $24 for adults and children (kids 2 and under are free). Visit for more info and to buy tickets.
White Rock Ostrich Farm
Get your head out of the sand and check out the White Rock Ostrich Farm north-west of Mississauga. View ostrich chicks that are one-day old, feed the yearlings and say hello to the Rednecks, Bluenecks & African Black adult ostriches. The kids will love it. Tickets: Adults: $6.00, Kids under 18: $4.00, Feed the Ostrich Teenagers $3.00/cup. Cash only.

Treewalk Village Adventure Park for Kids
Take your kids to the forest for a tree walk adventure. With several locations close to Toronto, Treewalk Village is a network of colourful tree houses suspended in a beautiful hardwood forest. Kids and parents can spend hours climbing up into the houses where they’ll have access to a connection of net walkways, slides and tunnels. Rates vary. See website for more information. Humber Arboretum
Humber Arboretum is located behind Humber College’s North campus in Toronto and consists of botanical gardens and natural areas surrounding the Humber River. This unique site is home to the Carolinian bioregion, the most diverse ecosystem in Canada, and boasts over 1,700 species of plants and animals. The Arboretum also includes more than six kilometres of walking trails. Cost: Free!

Farm Crawl Hamilton
Bring your kids back to the basics where they can learn about food and where it comes from during the Farm Crawl in Hamilton. How it works: The next crawl is on July 16. Visit the site for the list of farms and pick one begin your tour. Enjoy what the first farm has to offer and then move onto the next. Each farm designs its own activities and visitors can expect to spend 15-30 minutes at each farm. Tickets: Adults: $15, Kids (5-16): $5.
